Dark spots are skin areas affected by dischromia, i.e. a skin alteration which makes it appear lighter or darker than the rest of the skin. This pigmentation problem is very common and it can be caused by different agents that provoke skin changes.
Dark spots are mainly caused by factors such as:
- concomitant use of antibiotics and sun exposure
- sunburn
- contraceptive pill
- cortisone therapy
- pregnancy
The treatment of skin pigmentation issues must first be preceeded by a careful evaluation of the patient’s medical history, because the first step is eliminate dark spots triggers, whether endogenous or exogenous.
After the medical evalutation, therapy starts with fractional laser and chemical peels, in order to remove the skin layer that is affected by stains and stimulate skin regeneration.
After the treatment, patients should use sunscreens with high protection levels.
